Are you looking for a way to make your Midjourney images stand out? There is a new setting called EXP that many people are not using yet. It can help make your images look much better, adding more detail and visual impact.
I have made many thousands of images in Midjourney. I know that the EXP parameter is a great tool to add to how you create art every day. Let's look at why and how to use it.
What is the EXP Parameter?
EXP stands for experimental. It is a new setting you can use in Midjourney. Think of it like another way to change how Midjourney creates your image based on your words. The Stylize setting changes how creative Midjourney gets with what you write. The EXP setting helps make your final image more detailed and visually interesting.
At first, the difference might seem small. But when you turn up the EXP setting, the results can be big. Do you want to see what it does? Let's compare images made with and without EXP.
Seeing the EXP Difference
We used the same words for these images:
"Grizzly bear, mountain trail, Zenangle drawing, pen and ink, flat tan background."
We kept the Stylize setting at 100 for all of them.
Normal Prompt (No EXP)
Here is the image using only the main words. It looks fine, but there is nothing special about it.
Prompt with EXP 40
Now, look at the image with the EXP setting at 40. Can you tell the difference? The image with EXP has more depth. The colors are more interesting. You can see more small parts in the drawing.
Finding the Best EXP Value
Most settings in Midjourney have a value range that works best. The EXP setting goes from 0 to 100. Zero is the normal setting. But here is the part many people don't know: the best results often show up between 15 and 50.
Let's use our bear words again and see how the image changes as we raise the EXP value.
EXP 0 (Normal)
EXP 5
EXP 15
EXP 25
EXP 50
As the EXP value goes up, the bear gains more detail. The colors get richer. The drawing style becomes more clear. But watch what happens when we go above 50:
EXP 75
EXP 100
Do you see a big difference between EXP 50, 75, and 100? Not much, right? This happens because the EXP setting gives its main effect around the 50 value.
Making many Midjourney images requires skill and time. If you want to create images faster and manage your artwork well, think about using a service designed for this. Using EXP with Other Settings
The EXP setting is strong on its own, but it works even better when you use it with other Midjourney settings. Think of EXP like a spice you add to your favorite food. It adds extra flavor.
Here is an example using words for a portrait image.
Base Prompt (No EXP)
This is the image with just the main portrait words.
EXP 15 + Stylize 500
Now we add EXP 15 and Stylize 500. The image already looks different, with more style from the Stylize setting.
EXP 15 + Stylize 500 + SREF Code
We keep everything from before and add an SREF code. The SREF code brings in the style from another image.
EXP 15 + Stylize 500 + SREF Code + Style Weight 80
In this last example, we add Style Weight 80 to the SREF code. This helps control how much the SREF image style shows up. Using EXP with other settings lets you fine-tune your results and get the look you want.
When Should You Use EXP?
EXP is a good choice when you want:
More visual interest and added detail in your images.
To fix images that feel plain or not exciting.
To make art that needs an extra creative touch.
When Should You NOT Use EXP?
Do not use EXP when you need Midjourney to follow your words exactly. Like Stylize, higher EXP values can make Midjourney think more creatively about your prompt. It might change things you wanted to keep specific.
For most uses, values between 10 and 25 give nice results without making Midjourney ignore your prompt too much.
Tips for Using the EXP Setting
Here are some ideas to help you start using EXP:
Start with EXP 15 and see how it changes your image. Then, make small changes from there.
For pictures of people or things with many details, try EXP 10 to 20.
For images of nature or abstract ideas, I have found that EXP 25 to 40 often works well.
Always make two versions of your image – one with EXP and one without. Compare them to see which one is best. Sometimes, the image without any EXP is just right for what you need.
Managing many image attempts and keeping track of settings can get complex. A tool like the Midjourney Automation Suite by TitanXT can help simplify this process by managing your creations and prompts. Explore how it can help you be more efficient: See How TitanXT Simplifies Midjourney.
