Have you been amazed by the images Midjourney can create? Get ready for the next step! Midjourney now lets you turn your still images into exciting 5-second video clips. This new feature changes how we use AI art. It is also surprisingly simple to do. Let's look at how you can start making your own dynamic Midjourney videos, along with tips for great results.

Starting Your Midjourney Video Journey

Accessing the Video Features

To begin, go to the Midjourney website at midjourney.com. The video creation tools are currently only on the website, not in Discord. If you use Midjourney through Discord, just pick "continue with Discord" when you log into the website. If you are new to Midjourney, follow the sign-up steps there.

Understanding Midjourney Plans for Video

Before you start animating, here are a few things to consider about Midjourney plans:

  • All plans allow video generation in "fast mode."

  • For "relaxed mode" video generation, you need a Pro or Mega plan.

  • Video generation uses more GPU time, about eight times more than making a regular image. Be aware of your usage.

  • Higher-tier plans include access to "stealth mode." This keeps your images and videos from being seen by the public. This is good if you want to keep your work private before it is ready.

Crafting Your First Midjourney Image

Once you are signed in, go to the "Create" page. This is your own creative space where you will see your images as they generate.

At the top, you will see a bar that says "Imagine." This is where you type your ideas. This is called a prompt. Type what you want to see, then hit enter. Midjourney will make four images based on your words.

Making a good image is just the first step. Writing detailed prompts about styles, camera angles, and lighting can make your creations even better. Midjourney has helpful articles on their site called "Prompt Basics" and "The Art of Prompting" if you want to learn more about prompt writing.

Bringing Your Images to Life with Animation

Animating Existing Midjourney Images

Turning your existing Midjourney images into videos is easy. When you move your mouse over an image in your gallery, you will see a button to animate it. Or, if you click the image to open it, you will find "Animate Image" buttons below the creation action section.

You will see two choices: "Auto" and "Manual."

  • Auto: This is the fast way. Midjourney will automatically make a 5-second video using your image as the first frame.

  • Manual: This gives you more control. It puts your image into the image bar, so you can add or change the text prompt before making your video. This is good for guiding the motion or adding new things to your scene.

A quick note: Any special settings you used for your original image are removed when you make videos. This helps keep video output simple.

Animating Your Own Images

Want to animate an image you did not make in Midjourney? No problem! You can use your own images. Click the image icon on the imagine bar. This opens your images panel, where you can upload new images or pick from ones you already uploaded. Drag and drop your image into the starting frame section, or click it in your uploads. Your image will appear in the imagine bar, ready to be animated.

If you want to use the same image with many different prompts, click the lock icon to keep it pinned to the imagine bar. This saves you from uploading it again and again. Keep in mind that some other image types like image prompts or style references are not compatible with video generation. For video, we use the starting frame method.

Controlling Your Video's Look and Motion

Adjusting Video Settings

You also have some control over your video settings. With an image picked as your starting frame, click the settings icon in the image bar. Here you can change motion settings, GPU speed, and stealth mode. These settings match your image generation settings, which is handy.

Playing Back Your Videos

After your videos are made, playing them is easy. Just move your mouse over them on the create page. For more control, hold down the Control key (or Command on Mac) and move your mouse back and forth over the video. This lets you play it at your own speed, which is great for looking at specific frames.

Mastering Motion Settings

This is where you can make your videos truly special. You have two main motion settings: low motion and high motion. You can pick these using the buttons on the website or by adding "motion low" or "motion high" to the end of your video prompt.

  • Low motion: This usually gives you still scenes, small camera movements, or slow character movements. It is good for keeping a calm or focused feel.

  • High motion: This leads to bigger camera moves and larger character movements. While it can make dynamic scenes, it might also sometimes create unrealistic or glitchy movements. Try both to see what works best.

For even more specific motion control, you can use the "RAW" setting in your video prompts. Like RAW mode for images, adding "RAW" lessens Midjourney's extra creative flair. This gives your text prompt more say over the outcome. This is great if you have a very clear idea for the motion.

Advanced Camera and Scene Control

Midjourney has added new features for animation, like looping your videos. Now, instead of "Auto" and "Manual," you might see "Loop" which makes the first and last frame the same. This is good for characters that are just waiting or standing still.

The "frame-to-frame" option gives you full control over how your scene looks at the start and end of the video. This helps keep characters and objects consistent in a longer sequence.

Here are some tips for controlling camera and scene details:

  • Try "zoom in" and "zoom out." If you get no results, add "speed" to the description, like "slow zoom out" or "fast zoom in." Details like "full body shot" can also help.

  • If you want the camera to stay still, try "static shot of the subject." You can add details like "with trees blowing in the wind" if other things in the scene should move.

  • Instead of "zoom in" or "out," try "the camera is getting closer." If you want to zoom into a specific part, say "the camera is getting closer to that element."

  • For a moving camera that follows something, try "tracking shot."

  • Add motion blur: "the camera tracks the spaceship with motion blur."

  • Think about the viewer: "the viewer moves away from the subject" or "the viewer gets closer to the subject." You can also try "the subject stands still and the viewer moves to the left."

  • For slow motion, try "slow motion shot of the subject" or even "super slow motion shot of the subject."

  • If Midjourney adds unwanted movement, like a character speaking, try phrases like "character is quietly walking" or "character is walking in silence with a neutral expression." This helps reduce Midjourney's tendency to add a lot of movement.

Making Your Videos Longer

Five seconds might not seem like much, but Midjourney has ways to make your videos longer. By default, you get four video generations. After viewing them, you can pick one to extend. Hover over the video to see "extend auto" and "extend manual."

Extending 5-Second Clips

  • Extend auto: The video will automatically lengthen by 5-second steps, up to a total of 21 seconds. It uses the same prompt as the original video.

  • Extend manual: This option lets you change the text prompt and motion settings from the last video. This is great if you want the motion to be low for the first 5 seconds, but high for the next 5 seconds.

Creating Even Longer Videos

If you need a video longer than 21 seconds, here is a way to do it:

  • Export the final frame of your 21-second video using video software. Keep the same size.

  • Import this final frame back into Midjourney as a starting frame.

  • Create one or more new 21-second videos from this frame, repeating the process.

  • Finally, combine these videos in your video editing software to make a much longer video.

Understanding Video Quality and Downloads

Video Resolution and Aspect Ratio

Midjourney videos are made in 480p, or standard definition. The video's shape and size will match the aspect ratio of your starting image. For example, a square 1:1 image will result in a 624x624 pixel video. A widescreen 16:9 image will become an 832x464 pixel video. Midjourney might make small changes to the aspect ratio in some cases.

Downloading Your Animated Creations

When you right-click on a video from your create or organize page, you will see two download choices:

  • Download for social: Pick this if you are sharing on sites like Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube Shorts. It uses an optimized setting to keep your videos looking clear and crisp. This downloads as an MP4 file.

  • Download RAW video: This gets you the original video file Midjourney made, also as an MP4.

Transforming your Midjourney images into dynamic videos is a powerful new feature. It opens up many creative possibilities. Whether you are making short animations for social media or trying out motion, Midjourney makes it very easy. We encourage you to try it out. Play with different images, prompts, and motion settings. The more you experiment, the more you will discover what you can do.
