Did you know you can turn simple text descriptions into incredible art? That's the power of Midjourney, an AI tool that brings your ideas to life as images. It's easy to use, and this guide will walk you through how to start creating your own amazing visuals.

Setting Up Midjourney

Midjourney works through Discord. So, the first step is to download and install Discord on your computer and create an account if you don't have one.

Next, go to the Midjourney website. Sign up for a Midjourney account. Choose the option to register with Discord. This links your Midjourney account to your Discord profile automatically.

Once you join the Midjourney server on Discord, you'll find channels specifically for new users where you can start creating images using the Midjourney bot.

Using Midjourney in Your Own Server

In the public channels, your creative requests can get lost quickly among many other users. To work in your own space, you can add the Midjourney bot to your private Discord server.

  • Click "Add Server" on the left side of Discord.

  • Choose to create your own server.

  • Go back to the main Midjourney server.

  • Find the Midjourney bot, click it, and select "Add to Server."

  • Choose your new private server from the list.

Now you can use Midjourney in your private server without your work getting buried.

Understanding Your Midjourney Plan

Creating images with Midjourney uses time from your subscription plan. This is often called "GPU time." How much time is used depends on the mode you are in, such as Fast or Turbo mode. These modes make images faster but don't change the final look. If you're on a standard plan, you can use Relax mode for unlimited image generation time, though it takes longer.

Want to speed up your Midjourney workflow or handle many images at once? Consider using an automation tool. The Midjourney Automation Suite by TitanXT can help manage and enhance your creation process efficiently.

Writing Your First Prompt

The prompt is the text description you give to Midjourney to guide the AI in making your image. It's the most important part of creating art.

To start, type `/imagine` in Discord, followed by your description. For example:

  • `/imagine a car`

Midjourney will then generate four images based on your simple request. It's straightforward, but the results are impressive.

Refining Your Prompt

To get closer to what you picture, provide more detail. A good prompt often includes:

  • The Subject: What is the main thing in the image?

  • Art Style/Visual Effects: What style should it be? (e.g., watercolor, photographic, sci-fi)

  • Environment/Setting: Where is the subject? What is the background?

  • Lighting/Colors: Is it bright? Dark? Specific colors? (e.g., soft gold light, vibrant colors, black and white)

  • Composition: How should the image be framed? (e.g., close-up, wide view)

Using the earlier example, a refined prompt could be:

  • `/imagine a woman sitting in a yoga pose on a field of blooming lotuses, peaceful and serene, soft gold light, vibrant colors`

Adding details gives Midjourney much more direction.

Working with Your Generated Images

After Midjourney shows you the grid of four images, you'll see buttons below labeled U1, U2, U3, U4 and V1, V2, V3, V4.

  • U Buttons (Upscale): Use these to create a larger, single version of a specific image from the grid (U1 for top-left, U2 for top-right, etc.). Once upscaled, you get more options like Zoom Out or Pan.

  • V Buttons (Vary): Use these to create a new grid of four images that are variations of a selected image (V1 for top-left, V2 for top-right, etc.).

To save an image, upscale it first. Then click the "web" button that appears. This takes you to the image on the Midjourney website where you can download it as a high-resolution PNG file.

Advanced Prompt Techniques

As you get more comfortable, you can use more advanced methods to control your images.

Describe an Image

If you see an image you like and want to know possible prompts to create something similar, use the `/describe` command. Upload the image, and Midjourney will suggest four different prompts based on it. You can then use these suggestions or learn from their structure.

Shorten Your Prompts

Sometimes the `/describe` command gives you long or complex prompts. You can use the `/shorten` command followed by a prompt to get simpler versions suggested by the AI.

Adjust Element Weight with ::

Use the double colon `::` to give more importance to certain words in your prompt. Add `::` followed by a number to a word to set its weight. Higher numbers mean more weight. The default weight is 1.

  • `/imagine futuristic robot::2 glowing light::1` (Robot is main focus, light is secondary)

  • `/imagine futuristic robot::1 glowing light::2` (Glowing light is main focus, maybe an intense glow around the robot)

Create Variations with {}

Use curly brackets `{}` with options separated by commas to create a grid of images exploring variations within one prompt. For example: `/imagine a logo on a background of {red, blue, green}` might generate three images, each with a different background color.

Be aware that this feature uses more of your generation time.

Use Reference Images

You can guide Midjourney's style or composition by including an image link in your prompt.

Type `/imagine`, then paste the link to the reference image, followed by your text description. You can get an image link by uploading it to Discord, clicking it to open, and selecting "Copy Media Link" (or right-click the image and copy link).

Blend Images

The `/blend` command lets you combine up to five images into a new single image. Use `/blend` and then select the image files from your computer.

These advanced techniques can significantly enhance your creative output. To streamline using multiple commands, parameters, and images, check out the Midjourney Automation Suite from TitanXT. It helps make managing complex creation tasks much easier.

Using Parameters

Parameters are added at the very end of your prompt, starting with `--`. They control specific aspects of the image generation.

  • `--no [something]`: Removes an element. Example: `/imagine office --no computer` would create an office scene without a computer desk.

  • `--ar [ratio]`: Sets the aspect ratio (width:height). Example: `/imagine landscape photo --ar 16:9` makes a wide image.

  • `--v [version]`: Selects a different version of the Midjourney algorithm. Example: `/imagine abstract art --v 5` uses version 5.

  • `--weird [0-3000]`: Makes the image more unusual or surreal. Higher numbers increase weirdness. Example: `/imagine cat in space --weird 1500`

  • `--stylize [0-1000]` (or `--s`): Controls how artistic or stylized the image is. Higher numbers lead to more artistic results. Example: `/imagine portrait --s 750`

Checking Settings and Info

Type `/settings` to view and change your default preferences, like which algorithm version you want to use or enabling Relax mode.

Use the `/info` command to see details about your account and how much time you have left on your plan.

Start Creating!

Midjourney makes it possible for anyone to create incredible visual art with just words. From simple prompts to advanced techniques and parameters, you have many ways to guide the AI.

Remember to experiment and have fun! For those looking to take their Midjourney creations to the next level and improve workflow efficiency, exploring automation options like the TitanXT Midjourney Automation Suite can be very helpful.

Happy creating!
