Midjourney Version 7 is here. This new update brings several anticipated changes and features. Let's take an initial look at what's different and what you can expect when working with it.

Getting Started with V7

To start using Version 7, you can select it in your Midjourney settings. If you're on a basic plan, you might not have access to all speed modes like Turbo mode, which uses more credits.

One notable change in V7 is built-in personalization. Before you generate images, you'll go through a quick setup process. You'll see pairs of images and choose the one you like more. This takes about 5 minutes for 200 images. After this, your profile is set up to reflect your style preferences.

With personalization on, the images you generate will generally match your chosen style. You can turn this setting off anytime.

Comparing Version 7 and Version 6.1

One key difference is how V7 renders images compared to 6.1.

  • Version 6.1 often produced images with a more stylized or cinematic feel. Skin might appear very smooth, and colors could be artistic or exaggerated.

  • Version 7 tends toward a more natural and photorealistic look. Skin texture and details are more apparent, and colors are less saturated, resulting in a grounded appearance.

Even fabric details look clearer in V7, adding to the realism. However, if your personalized profile leans towards photorealism (because of the choices you made during setup), the images you see with personalization on might not look drastically different from those with it off.

Prompt Accuracy Improvements

Prompt adherence, or how well Midjourney interprets and shows everything you ask for, shows some improvement in V7. In some tests, V7 did a better job including specific elements mentioned in the prompt compared to 6.1. For example, in a complex scene description, V7 was more consistent in including the main actions.

However, V7 doesn't get everything right every time. Some complex scenes still show inaccuracies, and anatomical issues like extra limbs can still appear. Hands and feet can also still have distortions in both versions when you look closely.

Text rendering is another area that hasn't improved much in V7. It still struggles with accurate words compared to some other AI image generators.

New Features in Midjourney V7

Version 7 brings a few notable new ways to work:

  • Draft Mode: This mode is significantly faster (up to 10x) and cheaper (half cost) to generate images. The quality is lower than standard mode, but it's great for quickly testing ideas. You can enable it by adding "--draft" to your prompt.

  • Conversational Editing: You can interact with the generation process like chatting with a simple bot, making adjustments as you go.

  • Voice Mode: You can speak your prompts instead of typing them.

Keep in mind that images generated in draft mode are lower quality. If you like a draft result, you can click 'Enhance' or 'Vary' to create a higher-quality version, though these will be new variations, not just enhanced versions of the original. Enhanced images will also cost credits.

Managing bulk generations and complex interactions in Midjourney can be time-consuming. Consider the Midjourney Automation Suite from TitanXT to automate your workflows and save time.

Compatibility and Upcoming Updates

Not all older tools work with V7 yet. Features like Weird mode and Character Reference are not currently compatible. However, you can still use Image and Style references, as well as parameters like Chaos, Stylize, and Mood Boards.

More updates are expected within the next couple of months. A major upcoming feature is improved character and object reference capabilities. This could significantly boost V7's ability to maintain consistency in specific elements across images.

Initial Impressions

Midjourney V7 offers some quality improvements, particularly in photorealism, but the difference isn't always huge. Prompt adherence shows some progress, but isn't perfect yet.

Draft mode, voice mode, and the conversational workflow are nice additions, offering more flexible ways to generate. However, text rendering is still a weak point.

Overall, while the initial release has some solid points like faster draft generations and improved realism, the real power of V7 might come with the planned upcoming updates, especially the character and object reference features.
