A Midjourney generated image using Midjourney Automation Suite

Midjourney recently updated to Version 7. This update brings many new tools. One big change is a full image editor. It works with all subscription levels. A key new tool is layer editing. This feature works a bit like Photoshop. You can now add and change layers in your images. The editor uses AI to help. It feels a lot like using Photoshop. We will look at these new features.

Starting Out with Midjourney

If you are new to Midjourney, here are the basics. First, make an account. You can use Google or a Discord account. When you log in, you see images others made. Look at images in sections like random or top. Click an image to see how it was made. You can save images you like by hitting the heart icon. Saved images are in the Likes tab.

Midjourney needs a paid plan to make images. The lowest plan is $8 per month. Check out all the plans in your profile under Manage Subscription. After you pick a plan, go to the Create tab. You can see images you made before. The prompt bar is where you type your ideas to create images.

Key Settings for Creating Images

On the left of the prompt bar is an image icon. You can upload pictures from your computer. Use uploaded images in three ways:

  • Image prompt: Midjourney uses your image as part of the idea. This works well if you want something like your image.

  • Style reference: Midjourney takes the style of your image. It applies that style to what you create next.

  • Omni Reference: This tool helps create characters or items that look alike more accurately.

You can upload many images at once. Drag and drop images into the boxes. Or click a box and pick from your uploads.

On the right side of the prompt bar are settings:

[LI]Aesthetic:

  • Stylization: Controls how much Midjourney adds its own creative style. Low values stick close to your prompt. High values let the AI be more artistic.

  • Weirdness: Make your results more strange or surreal.

  • Variety: Changes how different the four image options are from each other. Higher values give more varied results.

[/LI]

[LI]Model:

  • Standard mode: Adds art style, good for posters or concept art.

  • Raw mode: Less art style, good for realistic images or more precise results.

[/LI]

[LI]Draft mode: Makes images faster but lower quality. Good for testing ideas before making final versions.[/LI]

[LI]Speed:

  • Turbo: Fastest, uses fast hours quickly.

  • Fast: Normal speed, uses fast hours at the usual rate.

  • Relax: Slower, does not use fast hours. Good for saving fast hours.

Personalizing Your Midjourney Style

There is a personalization option. You can set up profiles and mood boards. Go to the Personalization tab. To train Midjourney on what you like, click Create a Ranked Profile. Vote on at least 200 images. After this, Midjourney understands your style better.

Mood boards are picture collections that show a certain look or style. Upload images, paste links, or use images you already made. Once your mood board and profile are ready, turn on the personalization option. Select your profiles. They will apply to your prompts automatically. This helps keep your style the same.

Help with Prompts: Conversation Mode

Conversation mode uses Midjourney's language tool. It helps make your prompts better. Tell it your idea simply. It will write a detailed prompt for you. Use voice or text. It keeps working with your last image until you start a new idea. This is a useful new feature in version 7.

The Organize tab shows all your images in one place. Sort them or add them to folders. Managing large numbers of creations can take time. For users working with many images, tools that help manage and improve this process can be very helpful. Explore how automation might speed things up.

The New Image Editor in Midjourney V7

Version 7 has a major upgrade for the image editor. Go to the Edit tab. Upload an image from your computer or paste a link. To edit an image you made, click the Edit button on it. Then click Open in Edit tab. This loads your image into the editor.

Here are the tools in the editor:

  • Paint tool: Use this to erase or add back parts of an image. Change the brush size with a slider or mouse wheel.

  • Smart Selection tool: Click an area, and the AI highlights it. The tool is still improving. If it has trouble, try selecting a different area or change your selection a little. Click the plus icon to remove part of a selection. After selecting, you can erase backgrounds or subjects, much like other photo editors.

  • Move or resize tool: Make the canvas bigger, move your image, or change its size by dragging edges. Pick preset sizes from a list.

  • Undo, redo, reset: Fix mistakes or start over quickly.

Working with Layers

Click Add in the Layers panel to upload another image. You can then resize it to fit. Use the Smart Select tool to pick out a specific part, like a dog in an image. Then use Erase Background to cut it out.

Use the Paintbrush tool to tidy up edges around the item. Also, select the background layer. Erase some space around where you added the item. This gives Midjourney room to blend the two images together.

Add a simple prompt, like "a dog swimming in the ocean." Check settings and aspect ratio. Click Submit Edit. It takes some time. Look at the result. The dog blends into the ocean scene. The lighting is not a perfect match yet. Midjourney does not have direct tools to fix lighting this way right now. This is where other features or even outside tools could help with finishing touches or managing multiple edits.

Enhance your Midjourney experience with tools that streamline your workflow. Consider the Midjourney Automation Suite from TitanXT to handle your image creation and editing process more smoothly.

Adding Style with Retexture

Use the Retexture feature to change the look or feel of your image. Go to the Retexture tab. Describe the style or texture you want in the prompt. Add "moody cinematic photograph" to the earlier prompt. Click submit retexture.

See the new result. The lighting looks much more real. The images look polished. The items stay in place, but their look changes due to the retexturing. This feature helps change the vibe of an image.

Blending Multiple Images and Styles

Here is another try using layers. Start with a landscape image. Add an image of a cyberpunk girl. Resize, select, and erase the background. Use the brush to clean up edges. Erase some background area around the girl to help blending. Add an image of a spaceship. Do the same steps: resize, select, erase background, clean edges.

The prompt can be simple. Describe what is in your image clearly. Use the icon to auto-generate a prompt for a layer. Or upload an image into the describe option. Midjourney gives you prompt ideas based on that image. Check settings and hit Submit Edit.

The results look good. If the lighting is still off, use Retexture again. Add "Digital Painting Illustration Style" to the prompt. See the results. Retexturing changes the look and style of the image well. For example, adding "hyper-realistic photograph" changes the aesthetic and feel greatly.

You can also use an image as a style reference in retexture mode. Click the image icon. Select an image, like one with motion blur photography. Do not add extra style to the prompt. Hit submit retexture. See the results. They are realistic. The style matches the reference image. The spaceship looks real. This shows many creative options.

Combine layer editing and retexture mode for creative results. Experiment with different styles. You might make something amazing.

Comparing Midjourney Editor to Photoshop

Let's be honest. Midjourney's layer editor is not better than Photoshop today. Photoshop has more tools and is more advanced for image editing. But Midjourney is likely to keep making this editor better in future updates. The best part now is using layers and retexture together. This lets you be very creative.

Conclusion

Midjourney V7 adds useful image editing tools, like layers and retexture. While the editor is new and still growing, these features allow for more control and creativity in blending images and changing styles. Learning these tools helps you get more from Midjourney.

If you find yourself repeating steps or managing many images and edits, automation can help. Check out the Midjourney Automation Suite from TitanXT to make your creative workflow more efficient and powerful.
