Did you know Midjourney has a neat tool that turns images into suggested prompts? It's called Describe, and it can be super helpful when you're stuck for words. Maybe you love the style of an image but don't know how to get something similar. Or you just need some fresh prompt inspiration. Describe takes an image and gives you four prompt ideas based on what it sees. This post will show you how to use it both on the Midjourney website and on Discord.
Accessing Describe on the Midjourney Website
Midjourney recently made Describe easy to use right within your browser on their website.
From Your Gallery or Explore Page
If you see an image on the Explore page or in your own gallery that you like, you can use Describe on it directly.
Right-click on the image you want to use.
Select "Describe" from the menu that pops up.
Go to the Create page.
You will see four prompt suggestions based on the image.
Remember, these prompts aren't meant to make an exact copy of the picture. Think of them as starting points to get new ideas flowing. You can click on any suggestion to edit it, use it as is, or submit all four at once to see what they produce. Look for words or phrases that show up in several suggestions; these are likely strong elements Midjourney identified in the picture.
Using External Images
Have an image from somewhere else that you want prompt ideas for? You can bring it into the website.
Go to the Create page.
Drag your image file and drop it into the Imagine bar area.
Midjourney will then show you four prompt suggestions for that external image. If you don't like the first set of ideas, drag and drop the same image again to get a new set of four suggestions.
Using tools like Describe can really jumpstart your creative process. To generate many images quickly from these ideas or manage your creations, consider using the TitanXT Midjourney Automator. It helps you run batches, organize results, and save time.
Describe in the Full Editor
The full website editor, where you work with external images and use features like retexture, also has a Describe option.
Load your image into the full editor.
Click on "Suggest Prompt".
The suggestion will appear in the prompt bar. A key difference here is you only get one prompt suggestion, and clicking "Suggest Prompt" again won't give you a new one for the same image. You're limited to the first one it provides in this view. You can then edit the prompt or use the image content to fill space as you make changes before submitting.
Using Describe on Discord
If you prefer using Midjourney on Discord, Describe is available there too.
Type `/describe` in the message bar.
Choose "image".
Upload a picture or paste its URL.
Submit the command.
Midjourney will give you four prompt suggestions below your image. You can click the numbered buttons (1, 2, 3, 4) to submit a single prompt, which you can edit before sending. Click "Imagine all" to run all four prompts at once. To get a new set of suggestions for the *same* image, click the "Reroll" button.
Running many iterations based on Describe's suggestions can lead to amazing results. If you find yourself running many jobs prompted by different ideas, the TitanXT Midjourney Automator can help you streamline this process, handling multiple prompts and tracking your output efficiently.
In Summary
Midjourney's Describe feature is a simple but effective tool for getting started when you're not sure what prompt to use. Whether you're inspired by images within Midjourney or have your own pictures you want to explore stylistically, Describe gives you a jumping-off point. Use the suggestions to spark your own ideas and see what you can create.
