What's Different in Midjourney V6?
The main update in Version 6 is how much more realistic the images look. They often feel much closer to real photos. Another key improvement is the ability to add text inside your images, which was tricky or impossible before.
Prompting might feel a little different with V6, but the results can be exciting, especially with details and realism.
Two Ways to Start Using Midjourney V6
Even in this early stage, you can try out Version 6 right now in your Discord server.
Method 1: Use a Parameter in Your Prompt
When you type your imagine prompt, simply add ` --v 6.0` at the end. For example, you could type:
`/imagine prompt an astronaut surfing in space --v 6.0`
This tells Midjourney to create that specific image using Version 6. It's a simple way to test it out for individual creations.
Method 2: Change Your Default Settings
If you want all your future images to use Version 6 without adding the parameter each time, you can change your account settings. Type `/settings` in the message bar. This opens a menu where you can select your preferred Midjourney model. Just choose "V6" from the options. Remember, it's still marked as Alpha there, but it works.
Once you change this setting, any new prompt you enter will default to Version 6.
Comparing V6 and V5 Results
Seeing the images side-by-side really shows the difference. With a prompt like "an astronaut surfing in space," Version 5 might produce images that look less like a space scene and more like snowboarding, with odd details on the astronaut or the scene itself.
Version 6, using the same prompt, tends to capture the idea of being in space much better. The astronauts usually look more like what you'd expect, and the scene feels more aligned with the prompt's intent for a space setting.

How V6 Handles Text
Adding text directly into images is a big step forward with V6. While it's not perfect every time, you can try including text in your prompt. Sometimes it takes a few attempts or variations to get the text looking just right, but it's a capability V5 didn't handle well at all. For example, prompting for a neon sign with specific text is now possible.
Current Limits of Midjourney V6 (Alpha)
Since Version 6 is still in testing, certain features you might be used to from Version 5 aren't available yet. These include:
Zooming out from images.
Creating variations of specific regions within an image.
Using inpainting (the option to select an area to change, like swapping a flag).
These tools for editing and refining images after they're generated are currently missing in V6. The Midjourney team is likely working to add these capabilities, but for now, you have less control over making small edits to a V6 image after it is created.
