Midjourney just released the alpha version of its V7 model. This is the first big update in a while. It brings new features and improvements. Let's look at what's new and try some tests.
Highlights of the New V7 Alpha
Midjourney says V7 alpha is smarter. It should understand your text prompts better. This means it should create images that match what you describe more closely.
They also mention better image quality. Things that were hard for Midjourney before, like hands, bodies, and textures, are said to be improved. This is something many users have asked for.
Draft Mode: A Faster Way to Start
A standout new feature is Draft mode. Midjourney calls this a main part of the V7 update. It's meant to be faster and more efficient, especially for early ideas. When you just want to see different concepts quickly, Draft mode helps. They say it works about 10 times faster for these first sketches.

Midjourney also talked about a new voice option. You might be able to speak your prompt instead of typing. This feature is still being refined.
They noted that tools like bots and the upscale feature still use version 6.1 for now. They plan to update them soon. Also, improvements to character and object reference tools are coming in the near future.
Getting Started with V7 Alpha
To use V7 alpha, you often need to activate a customization profile. This involves rating images to help Midjourney learn your style. You see pairs of images and choose which one you like more. Doing this helps tailor the model to your preferences. The more you do this, the better the model understands what you like.
Testing new Midjourney models and features is exciting, but managing many experiments can take time. To make this easier, consider using an automation tool. Testing the New Features
Standard Mode Test: Hands
We wanted to test the supposed improvements to hands. We used a prompt for a close-up of a hand holding a technical drawing marker. We used standard mode for this test.
The results were interesting. Some hands looked quite good, with all fingers in the right place. Others still showed some strange shapes or finger counts. While not perfect every time, it seems there might be some progress on this common challenge.
The image quality and depth of field effects in the good examples were impressive. The focus on the hand and marker with a blurred background looked like a professional photograph.
Draft Mode Test: Scene Changes
Next, we tried Draft mode. The idea is to quickly generate concepts and then make changes. We started with a science fiction scene: a UFO flying over a forest at night.
Draft mode created several initial images quickly. They showed night scenes with a forest, fog, and UFOs with lights. The images looked quite cool.
Then, we asked it to change the scene while staying in Draft mode. First, we changed the location from a forest to a city. Midjourney understood and created city scenes with UFOs. The change was big and clear.
We then asked it to change the time from night to day, and then to replace the UFO with a helicopter flying over a desert. Each time, Midjourney seemed to understand the request and updated the scene accordingly. This shows Draft mode's use for quickly exploring variations on a theme.
Voice Mode Test: Character Design
We also tried the voice mode feature using Spanish. The goal was to see if Midjourney could understand spoken language and then generate images from that prompt.
We asked for a 3D character design: an older, bald man with some hair and glasses, in a Cinema 4D style. Midjourney processed the voice command and generated images.
The results were quite good for a first test, especially in Draft mode. The image quality and detail looked impressive, like skin textures and glasses frames. The glasses in particular seemed well-formed in most examples, which is often tricky for AI image tools.
We then used voice mode again to ask it to change the glasses to sunglasses. Midjourney made the change successfully.
Managing different versions and styles like this across many projects can be complex. Streamline your workflow and handle multiple requests efficiently. Text Generation Test
Adding text to images has traditionally been a difficult area for Midjourney. We tested this in V7 using the quote "less is more." We asked for it in a baroque style with gold letters on textured navy blue paper.
In Draft mode, the style and look (baroque, gold letters, paper background) were captured very well. However, the text itself was often mixed up, getting letters wrong or repeating them (e.g., "les sss is in"). For a three-word phrase, this shows text generation is still a challenge, even if the style is spot on.
We then tried the same text prompt in standard mode. Standard mode seemed to get the words correct ("Less is more") more often in the examples generated. The style was good, but perhaps not as intensely baroque as the Draft mode results. This suggests standard mode might process prompt information more fully, while Draft mode prioritizes speed for initial concepts, which might affect tasks like precise text.
Conclusion
Midjourney V7 Alpha brings exciting changes. The promise of better understanding prompts and improvements to difficult elements like hands is welcome. Draft mode looks very useful for quick idea generation and making fast changes. Voice mode is an interesting addition for prompting.
While text generation still shows some issues, the overall image quality and new workflows suggest V7 is a step forward. As an alpha version, we can expect more updates and improvements.
