Characters help tell a story. In marketing, showing a character's journey can connect with people. AI tools like Midjourney make it possible to create these characters. But how do you keep the same character looking consistent across different scenes? This post shows you how, using Midjourney V6, for building a compelling marketing message.

The Challenge: Telling a Story Visually

Imagine promoting something that helps people change, like a language learning app. You want to show someone starting out maybe feeling lost or uncertain, and then later feeling happy and successful. This requires creating images of the same person at different points in their story. Using AI, we need a way to make sure the character looks like the same person in every picture.

Setting Up Midjourney for Consistency

In Midjourney V6, certain settings work well for creating realistic and adaptable images. We used these:

  • Raw Mode: This gives you more control over the image look.

  • Stylized Low (s 50): This keeps the image less artistic and more grounded or realistic.

  • Remix Mode: Useful if you plan to change prompts later while keeping elements.

  • Version 6 (V6): Essential for the character consistency features.

Building Your First Scene ("Before")

To show a character's journey, we start with the beginning. For a language app, this might mean showing someone feeling down because they don't know the language. We used a structured way to write the prompt.

The FRAMES Prompt Approach

A helpful way to build prompts is using a framework like FRAMES:

  • Focus and Shot: What is the subject and how close is the camera?

  • Resolution: Think about camera type (DSLR, mirrorless) or specific lenses.

  • Ambience: Where is the scene happening? What's the setting?

  • Mood and Pallet: What is the feeling? What colors are dominant?

  • Extras: Any specific styles, aspect ratios, or parameters.

For the "before" image, we described a scene showing a Korean man feeling dejected on the streets of Seoul during blue hour. The prompt included details like "side profile medium close-up shot," "taken with a DSLR camera," "on the streets of Seoul," and specified a "dejected and gloomy feel," linking it to the 'blue hour' lighting.

We set the aspect ratio to `[LI]--ar 1:1`[/LI] which is common for social media ads. We also asked for five variations using `[LI]--r 5`[/LI]. Midjourney created images capturing the sad, lost feeling we wanted.

Creating the Transformation ("After")

The next step is to show the same person after they've learned the language, feeling happy and successful. This requires keeping the character consistent from the first image.

Keeping the Character the Same

Midjourney V6 has special parameters for this: `[LI]--cref[/LI]` and `[LI]--cw[/LI]. The `[LI]--cref[/LI]` parameter is where you put the image address of the character you want to reference. You get this by upscaling the image you like, opening it in a browser, and copying the image address.

The `[LI]--cw[/LI]` parameter stands for "character weight." It tells Midjourney how much to focus on keeping the *character* (mostly face and body shape) versus the *clothes* and style of the reference image. The weight goes from 0 to 100.

We used `[LI]--cw 0`[/LI]. This setting focuses almost entirely on the character's face and form, paying less attention to their clothing. This is useful if you want to show the character in new clothing or situations where their original outfit wouldn't make sense, but you need them to look recognizably the same person.

For the "after" image, we described a scene with a joyful man standing in Central London with Big Ben behind him, taken during golden hour. We used parameters like "ultrawide low angle shot" to show the scale and happiness. By adding the `[LI]--cref[/LI]` parameter with the URL of our 'dejected' character and `[LI]--cw 0`[/LI], Midjourney generated images of the *same* character looking happy in the new setting.

Using `[LI]--cw 0`[/LI] is great because it allows flexibility while maintaining the core character identity. Creating many scenes with a consistent character can be time-consuming. The Midjourney Automation Suite helps automate this process.

The contrast between the blue hour ("before") and the golden hour ("after") also adds to the story. Blue tones often feel calm or sad, while golden hour feels warm, hopeful, and energetic. This color contrast supports the character's emotional journey and can even tie into brand colors.

Picking the Best Image

After Midjourney generates the variations for your second scene, look through them. Which image best captures the new mood? Which one looks most like the character from your first scene? You can pick the version that works best for your campaign.

Final Touches and Usage

Once you have the image, you can take it to a tool like Canva for minor adjustments. Small edits to temperature, contrast, or sharpness can make the image pop more. Be careful not to over-edit, or it might look fake. The goal is to enhance, not create something artificial.

With the image ready, you can use it in your marketing materials, such as Facebook or Google ads, to tell the story of transformation and success through your product.

Generating multiple scenes for different characters or variations can quickly add up to a lot of work. The Midjourney Automation Suite streamlines this workflow, letting you create consistent characters across many prompts and scenes with ease.

Using consistent characters in your marketing helps build a recognizable story. Midjourney V6 provides the tools to create these characters and show their journey effectively.
